Mountain Fires for the Sacred Heart Devotion

Every year, during the summer solstice in June, mountain fires light up across South Tyrol. This beautiful tradition has its roots in the ancient solstice or St. John's fires, which have been lit for centuries to celebrate the longest day of the year. Originally, these fires were meant to strengthen the sun and drive away the darkness.
In 1796, this tradition took on a new and deeper meaning. During difficult times, the Tyroleans entrusted their land and freedom to the protection of the Sacred Heart of Jesus – thus, the "Sacred Heart Vow" was born. Since then, the mountain fires have annually reminded people of this significant vow and are a shining symbol of faith and hope.

The fires are lovingly shaped into crosses, hearts, or with the symbols of Christ ("INRI" and "IHS") and illuminate the warm summer nights. This special atmosphere attracts both locals and visitors, creating unforgettable moments. It is a moving sight that deeply immerses one in the history and culture of South Tyrol, making hearts beat faster.

The mountain fires are not only a spiritual symbol but also a sign of community and solidarity. When the flames blaze on the mountains, one feels the warmth and security that emanate from this ancient tradition. A visit to South Tyrol during the time of the Sacred Heart mountain fires is a wonderful opportunity to experience this heartfelt and moving tradition up close.

Tales and moments, mysticism and magic

History or stories? Dream or reality? The boundaries between reality and fiction blur almost imperceptibly. The cuckoo murmurs, the pine whispers, the little brook gurgles. And they all tell stories of their experiences and fantasies. Around the Wolfsgrubner Lake.
